Earthquake Visualization

Screenshot of the application

This project, aims to visualize the occasions of earthquakes using the open data set provided by the ZAMG (Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik engl. Federal meteorological and geophysical service of Austria) (ZAMG).

Using the open source library Leaflet, different types of maps are implemented as layers. As a number of earthquakes also happen in the sea, an ocean map is implemented as well, so that the tectonic plates can be seen clearly. Onwards, using the coordinates we marked the earthquakes with circles on the map. The circles differentiate in size and opacity. The higher the magnitude, the higher the opacity of the circle. The size of the circle shows the depth of the earthquake. As time passes since the occurrence of the earthquake, the circle fades out and eventually disappears. Users can filter the visualzed earthquakes by the power of the magnitude and the observed timespan. At the bottom of the map, users can find a table, which ranks the strongest earthquakes depending on the applied filters. This table shows magnitudes, dates, times and eventually the countries in which the respective earthquakes have happend, as long as they did not occur on seas. On the right of this table the median and the mean are calculated. The list refreshes as soon as the filters are applied with different options.

This project has been realized by the students Khaszul Gunbileg and Manuel Gapp in June 2019 as part of the course Data Ethics and Open Data at the UAS Technikum Wien. This course is part of the project IoCEST – Internationalisation of the Curricula in Engineering, Environmental, Smart Cities and Sport Technologies which has been funded by the City of Vienna.
