Open Data Expo 2025 Showcases Innovation with Public Data
On March 5, 2025, the 4th Open Data Expo took place at UAS Technikum Wien under the motto “Experience and Understand Data”, bringing together experts, students and the public to explore innovative applications and projects built on openly available data. Organized by UAS Technikum Wien and the Vienna Business Agency as part of the international Open Data Days, the free event featured interactive booths, networking opportunities, guided tours of the Vienna Air Monitoring Network, and diverse insights into smart city, transport, environment and energy open-data initiatives.
Hands-On at the 11:00 Workshop: Data Analysis & Visualization
A highlight of the day was the 11:00 a.m. workshop “Data analysis and visualization”, led by Lukas Rohatsch where participants worked with real datasets – including location data from doctors, pharmacies, universities and even meteorite records – to cleanse, analyze and ultimately visualize this information on a map. Using the open-source low-code tool “Orange”, which provides an intuitive visual programming environment for data analysis and interactive visualization, attendees were able to build workflows that filtered and transformed the data into meaningful spatial representations, learning practical techniques for turning complex datasets into accessible visual insights.
