Electricity in Europe

The transition toward a sustainable, secure, and climate-neutral energy system is one of the most pressing challenges facing Europe today. As countries aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase the share of renewable energy, and strengthen energy independence, transparent and accessible information about electricity production and consumption becomes essential. Policymakers, researchers, businesses, and citizens all rely on accurate data to understand current developments, evaluate progress, and make informed decisions about the future of energy.

To address this need, the project collects and analyzes data from multiple reliable sources on Europe’s electricity mix and presents the results on an interactive website. The platform provides insights into both historical and current electricity demand and production across European countries. In addition, it introduces and explains the various electricity generation sources – such as renewables, nuclear energy, and fossil fuels – to give users a comprehensive overview of how electricity is produced and how the energy mix is evolving over time.

This project has been realized by the students Giada Corlazzoli, Attila Vegh and Greta Zanchi in January 2026 as part of the course Data Ethics and Open Data at the UAS Technikum Wien as part of the StudyATHome hub. This course is also part of the project IoCEST – Internationalisation of the Curricula in Engineering, Environmental, Smart Cities and Sport Technologies which has been funded by the City of Vienna.
